I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I spied these paparazzi photos of Nicky Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, out together for a night on the town. It seemed as though I had traveled back in time at least five or six years, back to when I was in college and I used to read Perez Hilton on my laptop during my classes to keep up with the quasi-celebrities that had taken over pop culture at the time.

Back then, I was always on Team Lindsay. I’m still a big fan of Mean Girls and I liked her better than the others because she seemed like the most talented of the group. I also preferred Nicky to Paris, if I were asked to pick a Hilton. She’s the quieter, more reasonable, less flashy sister. She also has the most Balenciaga City Bags in her collection, which are a personal favorite of mine and something that she seems to reach for over and over, just like in these photos. And now it’s 2011, and LiLo is out of jail and Nicky is still the more awesome Hilton and they’re at it again. I wonder if we’ll be looking at paparazzi photos of them when they’re 40?

One version of the limited edition Nazca sport is a bit more “formal.” This model in all steel has a metal bracelet and textured silver tone dial. Lume on the applied hour markers and hands should help with legibility. Plus, the many facets of the case design should contrast interestingly with the more or less uniform coloration of the entire watch.

For me the design gambling at RSW pays off because I always give their new watches very close attention. The RSW Nazca being no exception. Past pieces of theirs that I have enjoyed include the Outland, Outland 3H, and Diving Tool. I mean, what they are going is real watch maker art. What do I mean by this? Well making a crazy looking watch doesn’t take a lot of skill. Hell, a 4 year old can do it. What does take skill is designing something really unique – that still takes into account agreed upon rules of aesthetic balance and timing instrument legibility. For the most part, I think you’ll agree that no matter how weird RSW watches get, these still take these matters in to serious concern. Which is certainly not something that can be said for all watch makers. As I noted in the past, word from RSW directly to me was that they employ their own designers that do all their work. This is in contrast to some other brands that for the most part outsource (to design firms) the creation of new timepiece designs. But I digress…
I love how a design like that of the RSW (Rama Swiss Watch) Nazca is bound to be so polarizing. I think that RSW themselves gets a kick out of that. I mean, from a purely business-oriented motive you’d want to make timepieces that appealed to more people, not less people right? Yet despite this RSW continues to tread forth in the design of timepieces that appeal to just some people, but certainly not all people. So what about you? What are you feelings on the Nazca collection?
Another version is available in a PVD black case. This more colorful model has red and silver tone on the dial, along with a contrast stitched black leather strap. Clearly the more sporty of these “Sport” watches, the red and black model is more visually avant garde. Though I would argue that the all steel tone model is more “brave” because at first glance it is a conservative steel watch, until you look closely and the design. Each of these two watches will be limited to 99 pieces. RSW tends to be rather fair with price, so I can’t see these Nazca Sport timepieces with asking prices above $3,000 – $4,000. Whether or not I am a potential Nazca Sport watch wearer is yet to be seen. But at the same time I hunger for designs like this as more and more mainstream brands are getting highly conservative with their designs – and you shouldn’t have to spend $100,000 plus on a really unique, but well conceived watch.
OK, so this here is the RSW Nazca Sport. Specifically, two limited edition versions. The steel cases are (I believe) 49mm wide and have a totally unique design to them – very angular and geometric, but interesting. The dial itself is still round, but the chronograph subdials thematically match the design of the case and bezel. Inside the watches are what I believe to be Swiss Valjoux 7750 automatic movement that have been modified to have the subsidiary seconds dial removed for a more balanced look on the dial.
The courage (or “audacity” as Europeans in their infinite defiance of how Americans use words call it) that RSW has actually does impress me. They are among a minority of watch brands that actually do take design risks (even though all claim to). And does this risky behavior pay off for RSW? I am not sure. Unfortunately not many of their timepieces make it to the US. But that goes for a lot of really good watches out there.

When money speaks, luxury brands listen. Chopard is known to offer its fine items to people of wealth from all backgrounds and public personas – they are a business, that makes sense. Plus, it is rare people like Birdman who have a high amount of disposable income and seemingly unquenchable desire for more and more “showy” adornments that make the “bling” industry as we know it survive. Note the underbelly of the watch with the exposed automatic movement. It doesn’t even appear to have much decoration. That is likely due to the fact that this audience simply perhaps isn’t trained (for the most part) to appreciate movements. Though I could be wrong and the movement plate is covered with diamonds! The movement is more than likely a base Swiss ETA. Telling the time is not exactly el primero on the list of important things to do while wearing the watch. And of the design of the watch? Well really, what can I say. It is what it is. Blingy, showing, large, full of angles to show off the diamonds. It has a sort of rugged masculinity to it, and feels as unpolished as the people wearing it. A bit like the opposite of elegant. Though given the chance, you’d totally wear it around for a day.

Birdman must have enjoyed his experience with Chopard a lot. In fact, he bought another high-end Chopard watch covered in diamonds for fellow rapper and friend Lil Wayne (who is also on Cash Money Records) on his birthday. This is another pieces and said to “only” have cost him a million dollars.

Birdman is not quite about the fact that the watch cost him $1.5 million dollars. Even on his large wrists the watch looks intensely sized. How often will he wear it? Hard to say. All of his music videos have him wearing a watch. I am sure that this Chopard will show up in at least a few? Is Chopard likely to make a marketing or PR opportunity about this high-profile client? Not likely. While no doubt a highly achieved businessman in his own right, Birdman’s less than elegant on screen persona leaves much to be desired in not scaring off potential clients. No offense to Mr. Birdman, but the extensive amount of tattoos on his less than gentle visage make him look like a less put together Mike Tyson. And might Tyson is anything but “put together.” I mean really, what does it take for one to forgo “regular teeth” in favor of gold, and the idea of extensive front neck tattoos (not to mention one between the eyes) sound like a quality idea?

“Straight from overseas,” exclaims Birdman. Referring to his joy that this watch is foreign. While not necessarily the case today, there is an aging sentiment that “nice things” from foreign places are “nicer.” Today most of our things are from China or other places overseas. Actually in many instances I would prefer things made in the US if possible. Sure Birdman could have used the term “from Switzerland,” but his actual terminology was more telling of the mentality of this sport of buyer.

Taken last summer (I believe), you have an intimate look at the mentality and desires of this type of high-profile timepiece buyer. What Elton John and rappers have in common is a taste for the highly ostentatious. There you can see the interesting chunky curves of this PAM-beast, with its titanium 1950 style case and built in helium escape valve. Dial is pretty standard with the typical Pamerai sub watch look. I think the inner bezel with the diver’s scale is an interesting touch. Hands are too stubby though. Does someone actually like stubby hands? Or am I one of the few people who notice these things? Still legible though. Inside the watch is a Swiss Valjoux 7750 automatic movement that has been modified and turned around. The chronograph has been removed, and flipping the watch movement around placed the subsidiary seconds dial on the right side of the case, and the crown on the right. Came on a light brown leather strap. Chronopassion made a good choice with this special piece. These are very hard to find, and with just 100 around, you are lucky to ever get one. There is one now on James List for just under $15,000.
In the world of limited edition Panerai watches there are cool ones and boring ones. This is one of the really cool ones. I also love that they all (limited to 100 pieces) sold out within one hour of being released. This is the Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM 358, and was specially made for the Parisian high-end watch store Chronopassion. The PAM 358 is a pretty crazy watch. Water resistant to 2500 meters (over 8,000 feet), the watch is shaped like a diving vessel with a large rounded bottom. It is known as a “destro” model, or lefty model, because the crown is on the left side of the watch. It is really thick as well – even by Panerai standard. The case is 47mm wide in titanium with a special rotating diver’s bezel that is in steel. This is one of the most coveted, ultimate Panerai dive watches out there.

The full line of Spanish Pita Barcelona watches are now available on James List. This includes the fascinating and highly character rich Pita Carousel. At first glace the watch is certainly unique, but you might not fully understand this bespoke creation. Each Pita Carousel watch is totally customizable – and made to order. The watch is 40mm wide (just 8mm thick) and available in 18k yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold. There is also the option of getting one in 950 platinum. The Carousel watch has its name for good reason. This is because the movement is visible right through the dial and spins around (like a carousel). The movement spins as it tells the time. Thus the movement rotates on its own axis. The watch is known as a 12 hour hand watch. Meaning it has just one hand that moves around the dial once each 12 hours. The hand itself does not move, but rather it is attached to the movement that is what moves.
It can take a little while to get used to 12 hour hand watches. You’ll notice that they follow a precise indicator path making it not so hard to read the time. Some people even think it is easier than a two hand approach. Each indicator is placed 10 minutes apart. This isn’t an ideal watch if you need too the minute precision (but in Spain who does?). However, it s a great style for when you want something more casual with a lot of hand-made character and a clean, classic looking dial. Because there aren’t many Spanish watch makers that I am familiar with, it is hard to recognize a “Spanish” style. The look reminds me of a mixture of Italian and Bauhaus design watches. The crownless look and solid lugs give the watch a very simple and inviting look. You can get dials that go from “instrument like” to quite minimalist. Pita is really nice about working with individual clients to achieve what is best for them. These are of course “luxury” watches, and such close attention from the makers is expected. Price isn’t cheap, but it is much less than what you would expect from dealing directly with most Swiss or even German independent watch makers. The Pita Carousel prices ranges of course, but is in the $20,000 range for the pictured version. Of course platinum will cost you more (though I really like the watch in gold).
Pita really likes crownless cases, and the Carousel is a good example of this concept in execution. A design developed by Pita makes the case back of the watch the crown. Meaning you turn it to adjust the time. I believe the Pita-002 movement is manually wound. While it uses parts Pita gets, they designed the movement and really make it their own. Nothing like it out there. Look closely at the dial and you can see the many ball bearings that the watch movement spins on.
In addition to choosing the case material, there are a number of hand and dial options available. This means you can choose colors the style of indicators, etc… Of course you choose the proper alligator strap as well. Really a ton of options at your disposal from one of the hottest independent watch makers today. The whole watch is hand made by Pita in Spain (Barcelona).

the HM3 Frog makes it easy

The HM3 Frog Zr is based on the HM3 Starcruiser, how appropriate. Zr is the chemical symbol for zirconium, a transition metal resembling titanium. However much tougher as ninety per cent of all zirconium produced is used in nuclear reactors, and zirconium alloys are used in space vehicles for their resistance to the extreme heat of atmospheric re-entry. However this new Frog isn’t the first of this family. In 2010 MB&F released the HM3 Frog in two variations and last year the Chocolate Frog was released, a limited edition of only 10 pieces, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of watch forum The PuristS. This is a gesture that shows how much on the forefront of interaction with customers and fans MB&F really is.

And like we can expect from Max Busser and his Friends, this watch is not only complicated from the outside! Inside its its tough black PVD zirconium skin ticks a movement created by Jean-Marc Wiederrecht (Agenhor). It is powered by a Girard-Perregaux base with a balance frequency of 28,800 vph. In total this piece of horological art is comprised of 304 components, of which 36 jewels.
From top to bottom are the HM3 Frog Zr, the Chocolate Frog and first HM3 Frog.
The purple automatic winding rotor is made of 22 carat rose gold. Above the rotor and positioned around the movement, is a rotating ring that indicates the date. The hour and minutes information is transmitted via ceramic ball bearings to rotating domes… or the Frog’s eyes.
Besides very cool looks and being a conversation starter ‘pur sang’, the HM3 Frog makes it easy (and fun) to read the time. With the HM3 Starcruiser and Sidewinder, the first HM3 models, you had to peak at the indicators from an angle. The HM3 Frog models make it much easier to read the time, although I would never consider it problematic if reading time from a watch like this isn’t as easy as it is on a simple two hand watch.

There’s a new Frog in town. MB&F’s new HM3 Frog Zr is made of the tough metal zirconium, normally used in nuclear reactors and spaceships! No kidding, the new HM3 Frog Zr is out of this world.
This is in my opinion exactly the fun of it and I consider a timepiece like to be a piece of mechanical art that can be worn on the wirst and even tells the time. This is art, it bold and it’s a statement.

This new watch collection from Jaquet Droz simply epitomizes simplistic operation. They are careful not to call it a world time because it only houses 12 time zones, though the buyer can specify what 12 sequential timezones they will be (and Jaquet Droz will presumably indicate appropriate reference cities for the time zone disc). Looking at the watch you see but three functional pieces of information on the dial: an jumping hour window, and minute hand, and a window with the a city name. And really that is all you need. Pressing the pusher at 2 o’clock cycles through the timezones and changes the city name as well as the hour. With just 12 time zones to go through you can only cycle in one direction. More complex multi-time zone watches allow you to cycle in both directions.

Other customizations include white gold and rose gold colored cases as well as various dial treatments. In addition to the rose gold with black enamel is a white gold version with a meteorite dial that is pictured. The lower images design is pleasant, but odd to the degree that you have a central round dial that does not seem to serve and purpose as the minute hand actually uses the larger dial, not the smaller one. A minor point, but worth noting. Jaquet Droz’s young looking CEO Manuel Emch takes you through this year’s new creations in the video below. Is he trying to grow a beard or does he just need to shave? I can’t really tell. I swear it is a distraction when he is talking. Still, he seems to know what he is going and the images of the new Jaquet Droz automaton are really cool. Basically it is a very complex machine that just writes down what time it is on a piece of paper. Consider it a very expensive science project that really only serves the purpose of being interesting to watch operate.

I am considering the utility of the Les Douze Villes collection and whether having just 12 timezones enough. I mean it is for the most part. In the US you’d really only need to cycle through four of them – but once you left this continent the watch wouldn’t be ultra useful. Basically you’d have to travel from Europe to part of Asia frequently to take full advantage of the watch – without needing more utility. What I really like is the sheer simplicity of the movement operation and information read out. Jumping hour watches are some of my favorite in terms of legibility and ease of use, and this is a very practical integration of that complication. Prices for the Jaquet Droz Les Douze Villes collection will run from about 20,000 – 30,000 Euros.
